Water Safety Instructor

The purpose of the Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, Adult Swim and water safety courses and presentations. Water Safety instructor candidates must be 16 years old on or before the last scheduled day of the Water Safety Instructor course.

There will be two delivery methods available for the Water Safety Instructor course—blended learning (preferred) and instructor led. The estimated course lengths for each delivery method are estimated and subject to change:

o Blended Learning Delivery Method: Estimated in-person length—25 hours; online content—7 hours

o Instructor Led Delivery Method: Estimated length—31 hours

To participate in the Water Safety Instructor Course, individuals must:

• Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled lesson of the course.
• Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:
  • Demonstrate swimming skills consistent with Level 4 of the Stroke Performance Charts by swimming 25 years each of the front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and side stroke and 15 yards of the butterfly.
  • Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
  • Tread water for 1 minute
